TORONTO — A new study finds that patients with low back pain who got a one-hour massage once a week for 10 weeks fared better than those receiving the usual care for the nagging condition.
The research involved about 400 patients aged 20 to 65 with chronic low back pain.
Daniel Cherkin of the Group Health Research Institute in Seattle says researchers looked at ordinary relaxation massage, as well as structural massage provided by therapists with more advanced training.
He says at the end of 10 weeks, both kinds of massage turned out to be reasonable treatment options for people with persistent pain that hadn't been adequately addressed by other means.
Cherkin says the benefits began to diminish over time, but were still evident at six months.
After a year, the difference between the massage groups and the group receiving usual care was not significant.
Dr. Andrea Furlan of the Institute for Work & Health in Toronto says the findings are important, because if people with chronic low back pain can feel better quicker, they might be able to resume regular activities sooner.

The study is published in the Annals of Internal Medicine.

Massage is one of the oldest natural healing therapies dating back to China nearly century ago. Today, massage therapy combines the ancient art of massage and the modern sciences of anatomy and physiology.
Massage Therapy is the application of ‘hands-on’ muscle healing techniques, and other associated therapies which have been found to positively affect the health and well-being of the patient. It is a general perception that massage feels good. What a lot of the population doesn’t realize is the beneficial effects that accompany massage therapy. Massage Therapy enhances health by acting directly upon the circulatory, muscular, and nervous systems to aid in rehabilitating physical injuries and various conditions.

Research shows that massage therapy reduces heart rate, lowers blood pressure, increases blood circulation, relaxes muscles, increases range of motion, and increases endorphins , the body’s natural pain killers. A recent medical study showed 65% of people found massage was ‘very helpful’ for back and neck pain, while only 27% found conventional medicine/physiotherapy was ‘very helpful’ (Spine 2003;28(3):292-8).

Whether seeking relief of a specific condition, searching for a method to help deal with stresses of daily life, or wanting to maintain good health and a sense of well-being, more and more of the population are turning to therapeutic massage for an answer. What is Deep tissue Massage ?

Are you aware that when individuals utilize the expression "deep-tissue massage therapy," they frequently utilize it improperly? Unlike well-known utilization, this kind of therapeutic massage isn't a universal phrase for any therapy that utilizes heavier tension. In contrast to Swedish therapeutic massage methods, these massage therapy usually are not right for reducing common pains and aches and can't be utilized within the full in just one treatment. Rather, deep-tissue perform is definitely a particular kind of therapeutic massage made to provide pain relief with a certain section of the physique. Utilized by properly trained massage practitioners to operate in to the much deeper levels of the muscle tissue, it may cure long-term conditions and muscle mass stresses and traumas in the specific way.

Deep-tissue therapeutic massage is suitable to assist with all the soreness, muscle mass firmness, and soreness related to:

                                                                                                          Arthritis

    Musclo skeletal conditions

    Whiplash

    Muscular injuries

    Common sports stresses

Whenever you request a deep-tissue therapeutic massage, be ready for a massage method that may be somewhat intensive. Simply because your masseuse is going to be  focusing on the fascia, joints, and muscle tissue that place underneath the top levels of the body's muscle, he or she will have to use sustained pressure and methods that can be quite uncomfortable at the time. Expect for the area to be sore for a day or two afterward. However, you will find relief from pain and improved range of motion to be two of the long-term benefits resulting from your massage treatment.

Massage is often available through chiropractic offices and athletic facilities like health clubs, but you might also want to check and see if there is a massage therapy center in your local area that offers deep-tissue massage. Working with an independent massage center often offers you superior options in terms of scheduling flexibility, customer service, and even price. Make certain that regardless of where you go to seek massage treatment that your massage therapist is qualified to perform deep-tissue work. Due to the concentrated massage of deep muscle layers, joints, and fascia, there is definite possibility for injury if your massage professional is not adequately trained, so be sure to ask about certifications, etc.

If you've recently been injured in a motor vehicle or sports-related accident or if you're dealing with the daily pain of chronic conditions like arthritis, deep-tissue massage may offer you the relief you seek. While Swedish massage is suitable for relaxation and general aches, deep-tissue treatment is often a more effective solution for individuals with specific complaints, pains, or conditions. As with all types of massage treatment, be sure to discuss your health, as well as your massage goals, with your therapist to make certain you achieve the best outcome from your massage sessio
